War On Patriotism: surrendering our freedoms to government watchers - politics

Winning the war on terror requires preserving our freedoms, not surrendering them to government surveillance Since this country's founding, many Americans have given their lives to defend the ideals established in the U.S. Constitution. The recent revelations concerning the National Security Agency's actions are an egregious violation of the Fourth Amendment. Indeed, the Patriot Act, which enables government intrusion into the private lives of Americans, is exactly the kind of law the Revolutionary War sought to prevent. The Patriot Act needs amending, or better yet, abolishing. The government's justification that these surveillance measures prevent terrorism, but cannot discuss what terrorism it prevents, is the kind of reasoning employed by Stalinist regimes in the Soviet Union. The Patriot Act produces terror: It creates fear, distrust and suspicion among Americans. One purpose of al-Qaeda's attacks was to create enough fear in democratic nations that their own citizens willingly surrender important rights for security. Adopting such measures play into the political agenda of terrorists by reinforcing existing images of Western democracies as repressive hypocritical regimes. Such images reinforce the flames that fan Middle Eastern extremism. In essence, the Patriot Act is a backdoor victory for extremism. The same applies to Guantanamo Bay. Sadly, our generation seems willing to give up the principles that prior generations of Americans have worked so hard to maintain. We need to reassess security needs in light of republican values. There are ways to secure our safety without abandoning constitutional guarantees. The Patriot Act reflects a failure of the government's intelligence community, which seems to think that broad surveillance on Americans prevents terror attacks. The NSA's surveillance system did not prevent the Boston Marathon attack. An important part of winning the war on terror is to preserve our freedoms -- not abandon them to secret government programs and anti-Republican legislation.

It's true what the NRA says. Proof, in Hungary Hand guns are illegal. Only Police and Criminals own them.
